Welcome Gavin. I’m an ex-homeboy from 55/59 … so ‘old boy’ would probably be more appropriate.

There are two streams of communication going on here … the main blog is the other one: St. George’s Home for Boys. This one is: Photo Tour. Go back to the other and you will probably read comments posted by some of your contempories.

    And Voila! You’re connected.

    Hi Louise

Have just read your comment about your grandfather, and I would like you to know that Ken and Audrey were two of the most wonderful people I have ever known.
Audrey was a calm and gentle “eye in a storm” if you ever needed to unload a problem or share a happy moment. You never felt as if she was judging you, she simply shared your experience with you.
Ken was a quite remarkable man. I cannot, in this short note, set out all my positive thoughts regarding the huge influence he had on so many boys at St Georges. Many people only saw the “sport” side of his work, rather than his all out drive to instill personal and collective achievement and pride, reaching beyond sport and into all facets of their lives.
Louise, I cannot do your grandfather true justice with my poor descrptive English, but I can say that my life would have been a far poorer one without the many hours spent with your Grandparents. Be very proud.
Please also pass on my fondest regards to your Mom and uncle Dave.

    Hi there Albert,

Lovely to hear from somebody that I have the fondest memories of. I have very fond memories of your wife Pat and you (Albert De Jager Taylor House).

I was quite a rebel as a teenager but with patients and love from the both parents I eventually sorted out my problems.

I agree with what you have written above they were two wonderful people that a very sadly missed.

Louise and I both keep an eye on this website to see who answers and you come through.

Please keep in contact : email address: heather.scheepers@ananzi.co.za.

    Kind regards

Hi there Albert. I’m glad to see that you’e still staying in touch with the site … haven’t heard your ‘voice’ out there for some time.

Heather, although we have never met … I noticed from your email address that your married name (I peresume) is Scheepers. My younger sister Sandra, was adopted at age 10 by a family of Scheepers, Louie & Kootie was her foster parent’s names. They originated from the Lichtenburg area … any relationship?

    Hi there,

Unfortunately no relation, these Scheepers are from Kempton Park area. Paul’s parents and grandparents all lived in Kempton Park.

Dudley did you know my parents very well ? I gathered thru the blog that you were a old boy but how long ago ?

    Kind regards

    Hi there Peter,

I suppose I should long time no hear. I think you should remember me the rebel young lady who had her own mind in doing things. I really do not know how my parents handled me but they did. My Dad was a pillar of strength through the years for me and my mom was the lady everyone thought she was.

My aunt Joan Harper is arriving on the 26th March so that is going to be quite exciting.

What have you done with your life.

I still remember the hidings your dad gave me ..for stealing his grapes and plums …when they came into season …ol Blackie used to work overtime on my backside ..but those juicy grapes were worth it lol ..he even joked about it afterwards ..which always drew me back the year later ..he always had a warm way of making the message come through loud and clear . but always with love and concern for our welfare .. i have the utmost respect for him and your mum ..she was such a beautiful woman .
Thank you for your beautiful family Heather ..even Bruno who carried your dads walking stick and news papers for him ..cute ol puppy he was .

    Hi there,

Well well what a surprise. Yes I do remember those days in the paddock and how we all had the same pasion to horse ride and love it.

My folks both passed away in 2005. My mom passed away April 21 with a heart attack and my dad 8 months later the 15th December with cancer. Well it was very strange at first not have them around anymore but I still feel the urge to phone my mom or dad just to say hello. I had moved back to JHB in 98 and I am glad I had. As at least I had a good couple of years with them before they both went.

I have two daughters and david has two daughters so certainly the McHolm name wil not be passed on. David is doing well he is CEO at Alert Parts in Jetpark Benoni. He also lives in Benoni and I live in Sunnyrigde Primrose. I actually work just down the road from St Georges which is now Bishop Baven and it is a private school. I have not been there since 2005 as my dad’s funeral was there. There is no longer a St. Georges Home as it fell apart just after my dad died. But we all have our good memories.

I will certainly send all your regards to Joan when I see her. She is now 87 years old and still travelling around the world in 80 days.

Please give me your email address and I will send lovely photo’s.

My email address is heather.scheepers@ananzi.co.za. Please drop me an email.

I have no pictures of the home just memories. One memory I have is a picture of St Georges band. It was a small picture that hung on the wall in the mess hall. I must have read the caption a thousand times during Grace before meals. St Georges had a great military brass band in those days.It read:
“Imperial Light Horse, led by the band of St Georges Home, marching to St Mary’s Cathedral, to receive their Regimental colours. 8th December, 1946.”
